FATERIP: A Game of Thrones and Dunes

FATE: A Game of Thrones and Dunes

A lost legion. A lost jihad legion. A lost interstellar jihad legion. Of Muad’Dib’s. From Arrakis. Dune. Desert Planet. Wormhole accident. Spaceship crash. On Westeros. A bunch of feudal white boys are in for a big surprise.

Draft 1.0 April 16, 2013 – Blue Tyson

SETTING

The Seven Kingdoms of A Game of Thrones, initially. A Guild Ship carrying one of the Fremen legions that wanted to continue the jihad gets into a Star Trek unlucky accident involving an astronomical event and the space time continuum. Ship damaged, they barely manage to land on the nearest planet that will support life. Surprisingly well by their sensors. The shock and damage of the crash leaves both the Ship and the Guild Navigator unable to function as intended for the time being. So a 30,000 strong Fremen Legion with 20,000 support personnel must now fend for themselves.

ISSUES

Winter is coming.
Winter includes an invasion by horrific monster people.
Aliens? How do they fit in.
Who is most racist?
Can We Get Out of Here?
We Aren’t In Our Universe Anymore – is jihad still relevant
We could conquer the planet..but probably couldn’t hold it long-term.
So just a local takeover, perhaps?
How should we live here?
Anyone for something more democratic?
They say you want a revolution.

FREMEN

Fremen and Imperial evolution and breeding programs have produced humans that are advanced physically and mentally from those of Westeros. Fremen warriors were the best in the universe, Bene Gesserit etc. aside. Plus with Jessica Atreides establishing training programs you have some talented specimens. The Fedaykin being the elite of those. These are therefore ranked in relation to local denizens. Want to make them stronger? Have Westeros be a lower gravity world than Arrakis and have a legion go all John Carter, too. Increase physical ranks by one. Allow prodigious leaps. All that good stuff.

ADVENTURING

SETUPS

1. A possibility that I find intriguing…the ship comes down at Castelly rock badly enough that it kills a lot of Lannisters. Tywin and a visiting Cersei among them. Power vacuum locally as well as new arrivals. If Jaime is missing, does Tyrion get First Contact privileges? Many Fremen won’t be fans of unfit speciments in their eyes such as him.

2. If landing elsewhere, an alliance with a lesser house that is more than happy to gain an advantage would allow PCs from Westeros and Arrakis in a group trying to work out this new world situation.

3. If landing in the middle of nowhere, scouts and then emissaries (after any foolish raiders or attackers get slaughtered and captured) may begin to play let’s make a deal.

4. Key female Westeros NPCs will be fascinated by an overall military commander who is a woman.

5. If smart Westeros people realise that accommodation and machination might keep them alive then: a welcoming tournament! Fun, games, skullduggery and murder for all.

6. An army of people with leadership by merit will horrify the nobility and intrigue the common people. Uprisings? Do Fremen propaganda experts [PCs] try and start them?

7. If monsters overrun the Wall, what will that do to the Fremen worldview? If in open conflict with the locals, it is enemy of my enemy time as monsters won’t mind eating a little tough desert meat.

a) For a completely different flavour, make it 5000 or 500 survivors. A whole legion makes the situation much more different and interesting though I think. With many more character type possibilities.

A lot of possibilities. Leaving the Fremen leader examples given above, the players could be:-

Fremen scouts checking out the place.
Fremen engineers working on getting life going.
Fremen scientists seeing if it is possible to get into space and what resources can be used to support high tech.
Fremen diplomats making contact with a house. Who is a good linguist, then, for first contact?
Westeros scholars or engineers eager to learn. Warriors, likewise. Others with more mercantile interests.
Commoners seeking a better life volunteering their services.
Spies, either way.

Mooks

One of the problems with FASERIP as great a system as it is, is the lack of opposition to attacks. This can mean that enough average guys and girls with guns or fists can turn your street level hero into an unconscious bleeding mess. This is not particularly comics emulation appropriate, so here are some varying suggestions.

  1. Any no-name designated a mook needs better than a Yellow Result to strike a hero. They can’t do better than a basic result.
  2. Any no-name designated a mook needs a Red Result to strike a hero if they are two ranks or more lower. For example, a Typical Fighting thug trying to punch VanDemon who has Incredible Fighting. Or the same Typical Agility thug trying to shoot Redback, who has Remarkable Coordination.
  3. Give a hero a Column Shift in their benefit any time they are facing mooks.
  4. Give a hero a Colour shift in their benefit any time they are facing mooks.
  5. One hit, one mook down. Or group of, with appropriate results, as long as the hero is only trying to take them out, not kill them. This also speeds up low-rent fights cinematically.

FATE: Blake’s 7

A political dissident is framed and sent to a prison planet, where he falls in with a bunch of criminals and ends up investigating an alien spacecraft. Commandeering the advanced ship they gain a couple more allies as they travel to oppose the evil brainwashing Federation with superior technology and repartee in classic dystopian space opera.

ADVENTURING

Oppose the Federation on any number of dodgy missions to gain allies, money, technology or just piss off Servalan in dystopian desperate space opera fun. Orac is a fine plot hook for finding out stuff. Before the end of season four, unless you fancy recruiting a new team.

Preferably give the scenario a chance to highlight social combat between Avon and Servalan and Blake and Travis, too!

FASERIP – Crime Does Not Pay

Villains and NPCs and mooks are not the stars, so a suggestion is to adjust the rank numbers when creating them to be inferior. This gives some numeric variety, too.

Feeble (1)
Poor (3)

Good (8)
Excellent (18)
Remarkable (28)
Incredible (38)
Amazing (45)
Monstrous (70)
Unearthly (90)

For normal people and mooks you could take that further and actually go the minimum starting route:

Feeble (1)

Good (8)
Excellent (16)
Remarkable (26)
Incredible (36)
Amazing (46)
Monstrous (63)

FASERIP – Rank Numbers and Character Creation – Advanced

Rank Numbers and Character Creation

One way character creation is done in 4CS and predecessors is to assign the lowest of the numeric range to starting characters. Here’s an option:

The game should be about the characters, so have them start on par with their predecessors with regards to abilities and powers.

So that you have:

Feeble (2)
Poor (4)
Typical (6)
Good (10)
Excellent (20)
Remarkable (30)
Incredible (40)
Amazing (50)
Monstrous (75)
Unearthly (100)

for starting characters, to put them on par with Shellheads and Women Without Fear.
